1899 Jissen Girls' School and Jissen Girls' Polytechnic (forerunners of Jissen) founded
From this time up to the present, the practical history of women's education has been steadily built up.
2019 Jissen celebrates its 120th anniversary
We aim at even greater development of women's education.
1882 | Shimoda School (Toyo School) established |
1893 | Utako Shimoda goes on observation tour of Europe |
1898 | Utako Shimoda becomes president of newly founded Imperial Women’s Association |
1899 | Jissen Girls' School and Jissen Girls' Polytechnic founded at Kojimachi, Tokyo |
1903 | Jissen moves to Shibuya |
1905 | Department established for students from China |
1908 | Jissen Girls' School and Jissen Girls' Polytechnic merged and renamed Jissen Girls’ Private School, Jissen Higher Specialized School (Home Economics and Practical Arts Departments) established, affiliated kindergarten opened |
1920 | Girls’ higher school section reorganized into 3 departments: Japanese, Home Economics, and Practical Arts |
1924 | English Department added to Girls’ higher school section |
1932 | Jissen Higher Specialized School renamed Jissen Women’s College |
1936 | Founder Utako Shimoda dies |
1945 | School buildings destroyed by fire; end of World WarⅡ |
1947 | Organization renamed as Jissen Women’s Educational Institute; Jissen Joshi Gakuen Junior High School established in line with new Education Act |
1948 | Jissen Joshi Gakuen High School established in line with new Education Act |
1949 | Jissen Women’s College promoted to Jissen Women’s University |
1950 | Jissen Women’s Junior College (Department of Home Economics) established |
1952 | Departments of Japanese Literature and English Literature added to Jissen Women’s Junior College |
1965 | Buildings, Hino dormitory, swimming pool built at University Hino campus in western Tokyo |
1976 | Junior College moved to new campus at Hino |
1985 | New building and gymnasium built at University Hino campus. |
1986 | All University departments and courses moved to facilities at Hino campus |
1995 | Faculty of Home Economics renamed Faculty of Human Life Sciences, and Department of Human Sciences & Arts established |
1999 | Sakura Hall cafeteria, new office block, and auditorium built to commemorate 100th Anniversary |
2000 | Junior College departments renamed and restructured |
2004 | Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences) established |
2011 | Department of Studies on Contemporary Society added to Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences |
2013 | Health and Nutrition Course added to Department of Human Life Sciences (Faculty of Human Life Sciences) |
2014 | Opening of Jissen Women’s University Shibuya Campus |
